The Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Analytical Service Center provides a unique facility for determining concentrations of environmental contaminants in soil, air and water samples. The lab operates as a user facility where researchers can come in to use the requested equipment.

The facility helps address state, national, and international research project needs. This can include specialized analyses from outside firms that are within our areas of expertise but are not commercially available.

Students across the university can have the opportunity to learn how to use environmental analytical instrumentation, become familiar with quality control procedures, and help analyze the numerous samples typically required for research projects.

The Animal Resources Center is the administrative unit given the primary responsibility to provide centralized care for vertebrate animals utilized in the research and teaching activities of the University, and it also serves as a source of expertise and support for investigators and the administration on all issues related to laboratory animals. ARC employees are responsible for the majority of direct animal care in the centrally managed animal facilities and satellites, and together with the IACUC they provide guidance and assistance to research groups maintaining vertebrate animals in lab-managed satellites.

The UT Austin Bureau of Economic Geology’s Near Surface Observatory features LiDAR and hyperspectral data analysis for environmental monitoring and geological research. The E-beam Lab houses an electron microprobe with five wavelength-dispersive spectrometers (WDS) and a large-area energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) on our low-vacuum SEM for non-destructive in-situ elemental characterization. Both can be used to qualitatively or quantitatively map elemental concentration variations (>100s of ppm) from the micron to the cm scale, as well as ~1 cubic micron focused beam analyses (>10 ppm).

The Industrial CT Scanning Facility provides high-resolution, non-destructive density mapping for solid samples, including rocks and fossils, up to 50 cm in diameter, 150 cm in height, and a mass of 50 kg. This facility utilizes an advanced industrial CT scanner, adapted from medical CAT scanning technology, to deliver detailed internal imaging, supporting researchers in fields that require precise, internal structural analysis of diverse sample types
