Research that's Changing the World

Josh Busby identifies major security risks and political instabilities around the world associated with extreme weather events and climate change. As a former senior advisor for climate at the U.S. Department of Defense, he established key priorities to improve the resiliency of U.S. defense operations and facilities abroad and recommended proactive measures the Department of Defense and other government agencies could employ to reduce the security risks associated with climate change.

What Starts Here

Busby, one of the most influential scholars working at the intersection of climate and international security, has served on the faculty of the LBJ School since 2006. He also is a distinguished scholar at the Strauss Center, nonresident fellow with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and a senior research fellow at the Center for Climate & Security. Dr. Busby has published widely on climate change, global health, transnational advocacy movements and U.S. foreign policy.

Beyond the Forty Acres

Michael Ross, professor, UCLA Department of Political Science: "His 2022 book (States of Nature: The Effects of Climate Change on Security) is his most important contribution to date; it is an intellectual powerhouse that makes essential advances of our understanding of the conditions under which climate change is contributing to the onset of violent conflict."
