Research that's Changing the World
The BBC has referred to Alan Bovik as “the godfather of streaming tech.” His pioneering, Primetime Emmy Award-winning work on the visual neuroscience of streaming and social media defines the technologies that control the quality of what the world sees on their computers, televisions, and smartphones. His picture and video quality models currently process 70-80 percent of all data transported on the internet. By creating algorithms that optimize visual media streaming, Bovik not only has enhanced the viewing experiences of billions of people worldwide, his inventions have also significantly reduced global bandwidth consumption.
What Starts Here
Bovik is one of the most accomplished video engineers and applied visual neuroscientists in the world. He is a leading figure in visual media technology and focuses on creating new theories and algorithms that allow for the perceptually optimized streaming and sharing of visual media. He’s currently the Cockrell Family Regents Endowed Chair in the Cockrell School of Engineering, director of the Amazon Science Hub, and director of the Laboratory for Image and Video Engineering (LIVE).
Beyond the Forty Acres
Blake Homan, President and CEO of Video Clarity: "It is accurate to say that essentially every video or image-based product or service that involves perceptual quality testing, measurement, monitoring, and streaming over the Internet can be directly linked to Al’s work."
