Spintronics & Magnetism
Spintronics is the harnessing of spin, magnetism, and related materials properties for information processing, memory, and sensing. Major applications include solid state memory such as magnetic random-access memory (MRAM), in-memory computing such as analog crossbar arrays for AI training and inference, neuromorphic and probabilistic computing for brain-inspired computing utilizing the properties of magnetic materials and associated devices, computing for extreme environments such as space where magnetic materials provide inherent radiation tolerance, new magnetic materials and technologies for energy storage and transfer, and quantum computing through the interaction of magnetic and superconducting materials. The associated research groups focus on both fundamental physics, materials science, and interfacial interactions, as well as applications to semiconductor technology and smart sensors such as in the automotive industry.
