Assistant Professor Cheng Guo and two students in his research group recently published a paper in Physical Review A that serves as a tutorial on three fundamental symmetries of photonics: reciprocity, energy conservation, and time-reversal symmetry.

The paper “Compound symmetries and double asymmetry groups in linear time-invariant photonic systems” is co-authored by PhD students Yunrui Wang, Shiyu Li and Guo.

"We wrote the paper as a 21-page tutorial that builds the theory from the ground up — the paper I wish I had as a puzzled PhD student," said Guo. "I hope it helps students and researchers alike see the elegant mathematics and physics behind every photonic system."
