Electronics Services supports research labs by maintaining and repairing a wide range of biomedical and scientific equipment, from incubators and freezers to specialized instrumentation. The facility also provides consultation on electrical, mechanical, and facilities-related issues that affect laboratory operations. In addition, specialized electronics repair, including surface-mount and fine-pitch device rework, are offered.
Services
Electronics Services provides general electronics repair, maintenance, calibration, and installation design for scientific and laboratory equipment.
The facility also offers consultation on electrical issues in laboratories and classrooms. Specialized capabilities include expert surface-mount device (SMD) rework and trace repair utilizing compressed nitrogen and air equipment.
The facility maintains and repairs a wide range of equipment, typically including the following:
- Incubators and incubated shakers
- Centrifuges
- Water systems and water baths
- PCR machines
- Electrophoresis equipment and gel doc systems
- Freezers and refrigerators
- General biomedical and scientific laboratory instrumentation
Safety and Service Protocol
Step 1: *Determine if Equipment must be Decontaminated
Read EHS – Decontamination Form & Instructions to see if applicable.
Step 2: Complete Laboratory Equipment Decontamination Request if equipment is contaminated. Learn more about general equipment safety and decontamination process.
Step 3: Submit a request for service or consultation
*All laboratory equipment has the potential for contamination. Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) provides support on decontamination and general equipment safety.
FAQ
Can you repair my Freezer/Refrigerator?
Yes! Electronics Services provides repairs on both types of equipment (within legal limits) and this includes replacing seals, gaskets, back-up batteries, condenser fans, etc.
Can you provide Electrical Installations?
Electrical installations are generally the responsibility of Facilities Services or outside contractors, however depending on the equipment or issue, Electronics Services may be able to help as we maintain a State of Texas Master’s Electrical license.
Can I bring Personal Items to you for repair?
No. This department’s services extend only to UT owned equipment. Work performed on personal items is strictly forbidden by University policy.
Do you offer Equipment Design services?
Consultations for design work are accepted on a case-by-case basis. Completion time frames must be flexible as repair of equipment is considered priority.
Do you offer services After Hours?
Normal working hours are from 8am - 5pm, Monday - Friday, closed for lunch from 12pm - 1pm. Emergency requests or unusual circumstances may require later and/or earlier operating hours as well as weekend availability.
Do you offer Plumbing services for equipment?
Plumbing lines or piping integral to equipment is typically provided by Electronics Services. However, lines which connect feed from building utilities generally is the responsibility of Facilities Services.
Do you service Autoclaves/Sterilizers or Dishwashers?
Autoclaves/Sterilizers and most dishwashers are the responsibility of Facilities Services. All equipment should display a tag indicating that Facilities Services is the designated repair entity, an equipment ID number and phone number to call for service. Some stand-alone units that are not hardwired/piped to building utilities may be serviced by Electronics Services.
Do you service Vacuum Pumps?
Contact us to determine if a service can be provided on your specific pump/application. Vacuum pumps are not usually serviced by Electronic Services; however, we do service most aspiration pumps.
Do you offer any equipment Maintenance Tips?
Aspiration Pumps: Change out tank water at least monthly to avoid malfunctions and unnecessary service calls.
Vacuum Pumps: Change out oil as per manufacturer's recommendations to insure trouble-free operation.
