Young Investigator DoD Awards

DARPA Young Faculty Award (YFA)

  • This YFA will provide high-impact funding to elite researchers early in their careers to develop innovative new research directions in the context of enabling transformative DoD capabilities.
  • Eligibility: this program is limited to any current tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professors and to tenured Assistant or Associate Professors within three (3) years of their tenure appointment at a U.S. institution of higher education or equivalent at a U.S. non-profit science and technology research institutions.

Army Research Office Young Investigator Program

  • The objective of the YIP is to attract to Army research outstanding young university faculty members, to support their research, and to encourage their teaching and research careers.
  • Eligibility: U.S. citizens, U.S. Nationals, and Permanent Resident Aliens holding tenure-track positions at U.S. institutions of higher education, who have held their graduate degrees (Ph.D. or equivalent) for fewer than five years at the time of application.
  • Applicants contemplating submission of a whitepaper or proposal are strongly encouraged to contact the appropriate Technical Point of Contact (TPOC). TPOCs are listed immediately after each research area of interest (see ARO document).

Air Force Young Investigator Program

  • The objective of this program is to foster creative basic research in science and engineering; enhance early career development of outstanding young investigators; and increase opportunities for the young investigator to recognize the Air Force mission and related challenges in science and engineering.
  • The Air Force YIP supports scientists and engineers who have received Ph.D. or equivalent degrees in the last five years and show exceptional ability and promise for conducting basic research.
  • Eligibility: scientists and engineers who have received Ph.D. or equivalent degrees in the last five years and show exceptional ability and promise for conducting basic research. Principal Investigator is a U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident; employed on a full-time basis and hold a regular position.

Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigator Program (YIP)

  • The objectives of this program are to attract outstanding faculty members of Institutions of Higher Education to the Department of the Navy’s Science and Technology (S&T) research program, to support their research, and to encourage their teaching and research careers.
  • Eligibility: the Principal Investigator of a proposal must be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident (on the date proposals are due).

NASA: Early Career Faculty (ECF)

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Headquarters has released a solicitation, titled Early Career Faculty (ECF), as an appendix to the Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) umbrella NASA Research Announcement (NRA) titled “Space Technology Research, Development, Demonstration, and Infusion 2019” (SpaceTech-REDDI-2019). NASA is seeking proposals that plan to pursue innovative, early-stage space technology research in the topic areas specifically enumerated in the solicitation.
