2020 University Co-Operative Society’s Research Excellence Awards

The Office of the Vice President for Research announces the opening of applications for the 2020 University Co-Operative Society’s Research Excellence Awards in the following three categories:

The University Co-Operative Society’s Research Awards are given for outstanding research and scholarship conducted by eligible University of Texas at Austin faculty members or staff researchers. A selection committee comprised of faculty and researchers reviews all eligible submissions and selects award winners in each category. The University Co-Operative Society hosts a fall ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of the honorees and their guests.

Submission and Due Dates

  • Submitted works, if eligible for multiple Co-Op Awards, may only be considered for one of these awards. Nominees will be advised if such a conflict is identified.

  • Deadline: 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 25, 2020.

Career Research Excellence Award

Award Description

  • The Career Excellence Award recognizes sustained outstanding research achievement by a faculty member or permanently employed staff researcher over many years, in any discipline.
  • Nominees should have received national and/or international recognition for excellence in their area of specialization, or in interdisciplinary or hybrid areas that include their specialties.
  • Accomplishments and/or recognition should be well documented.
  • Self-nominations will be accepted, as well as those submitted by Proxy.
  • The winner will receive a cash award of $10,000.

Nomination Requirements

  1. A justification statement or rationale for nomination (200-word maximum).
  2. The nominee’s Curriculum Vitae.
  3. Two letters of support from content/field/scholarship experts/faculty members/researchers familiar with the nominee’s area of research or creative achievement. For this award, both letters of support should be from external sources (outside the UT System).
  4. Nominations must be submitted to https://utexas.infoready4.com/ by 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 25, 2020.

Best Research Paper Award

Award Description

  • The Best Research Paper Award recognizes extraordinary achievement by a faculty member or staff researcher who was the principal or sole author of a peer-reviewed scholarly paper reporting original research and published during January 1 – December 31, 2019.
  • The nominated paper should have received national and/or international recognition for excellence.
  • The paper’s impact and/or recognition should be well documented.
  • Self-nominations will be accepted, as well as those submitted by Proxy.
  • The winner will receive a cash award of $3,000.

Nomination Requirements

  1. A justification statement or rationale for nomination (200-word maximum).
  2. The nominee’s Curriculum Vitae.
  3. Two letters of support from content/field/scholarship experts/faculty members/researchers familiar with the nominee’s area of research or creative achievement. Recommendation letters from UT Austin colleagues are acceptable. Recommendation letters and rationale statement should clearly explain why the nominated paper is relevant and significant to the field.
  4. Copies of the nominated paper and evidence of the research publication’s quality. Evidence of scholarly impact may include citation index, popular press coverage, selection as a journal cover, etc.

Creative Research Award

Award Description

  • The Creative Award recognizes extraordinary creative achievement and scholarship by a faculty member or staff researcher from January 1 to December 31, 2019.
  • Examples of outstanding creative achievements may include, but are not limited to, performances, creative writing, exhibitions, dance, choreography, music, opera, drama, directing, conducting, performance art, costume design and technology, set design and technology, lighting design and technology, sound art, ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, videography, filmmaking, screenplays, documentaries, conceptual art, and computer art, as well as applied arts such as industrial design, graphic design, interior design, decorative art, landscape architecture and architectural design.
  • The creative achievement should have received national and/or international recognition for excellence in its area of specialization, or in interdisciplinary or hybrid areas that include the specialty.
  • Evidence of accomplishments and/or recognition should be provided.
  • Self-nominations will beaccepted, as well as those submitted by Proxy.
  • The winner will receive a cash award of $3,000.

Application Requirements

  1. A justification statement or rationale for nomination (200-word maximum).
  2. The nominee’s Curriculum Vitae.
  3. Two letters of support from content/field/scholarship experts/faculty members/researchers familiar with the nominee’s area of research or creative achievement.
  4. The nomination packet must include supporting material for creative achievement, such as a libretto, DVD, MP3, photos, or reviews.
