About The Welch Foundation
The Welch Foundation, based in Houston, Texas, is one of the United States’ largest private funding sources for basic chemical research. Since its founding in 1954, the organization has contributed to the advancement of chemistry through research grants, departmental programs, endowed chairs and other special projects at educational institutions in Texas. The Welch Foundation has been a generous benefactor of the sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, with gifts totaling more than $144 million to support advancement in the fields of Chemistry, Engineering, Molecular Biosciences, Pharmacy, and others.
Norbert D. Dittrich has worked at The Robert A. Welch Foundation since 1977 and has been president since 1993. He received his B.B.A. with Honors at The University of Texas at Austin in 1974. Since then, he has participated in many business and public services organizations. Currently, he is on the investment committees for the American Chemical Society and the Chemical Heritage Foundation. He also has been a member of the Foundation Financial Officers Group since 1996 and currently is a board member. He also has been a member of Philanthropy Southwest since 1983 and was president in 1997. He is on the Industry and Community Affiliates Committee for The Academy of Medicine, Engineering & Science of Texas and the advisory council for The University of Texas at Austin, College of Natural Sciences Foundation. A few among many past positions in business and public service include Nonprofit Organizations Institute at UT School of Law, member of the board of directors and chair at St. Agnes Academy and St. Agnes Academy Foundation. He was also a member of the pastoral and finance council with Saint Cecilia Catholic Church.
