Screening Scribes: Letters to Eloísa

“Screening Scribes” is a series of four films on major writers from Cuba produced in the 2010s by renowned documentarians Oneida González and Gustavo Pérez-Fernández (Camagüey/Miami), Ernesto Fundora (Havana/Mexico D.F.), Jorge Dalton (Havana/El Salvador), and Adriana Bosch (Miami).

Each film upgrades breakthroughs in the cinematic grammar of Cuban filmmaking to convey the creative signatures, intellectual orbits, and affective worlds of three of the most consequential polymaths in Cuba’s arts and letters: José Lezama Lima (1910–1976), Severo Sarduy (1937–1993), and Eliseo Alberto (1951–2011). Interweaving life and afterlife, ink and light, print and screen, these directors track the indelible marks and troubling erasures of these writers in the visual archive and cultural memory of the Cuban Revolution.

The series is curated by The University of Texas at Austin Professor César A. Salgado, who will conduct a conversatorio/Q&A with the documentarians via Zoom on select Thursdays from February to May from 5:00 to 6:15 PM CST. **Each film will be available for streaming via Vimeo password for three days (Tuesday to Thursday) before each conversatorio.

Except for Adriana Bosch, all the conversatorios will be conducted in Spanish.
